Turns out I was looking at the monster entries when I should have been looking at the spell descriptions. 5e hasn't come up with Construct based healing spells yet. It would make sense to just in general let mending let constructs spend 1 hit die to heal as if they'd short rested, and as you say, since hit dice are finite, it would be intrinsically finite (and slow) healing.
