WebHelen Rittelmeyer wrote a savage critique of Pevear and Volokhonsky's translation of The Brothers Karamazov. She titled it 'The Pevear Volokhonsky Hype Machine' which gives some indication of her distain. Her recommendation was for the Oxford World Classics translation by Ignat Avsey. I am not really qualified to judge. WebAvsey was consistently the most easily read. Long sentences where the semantics were completely lost on some people were obvious with Avsey. His word choices always seemed to make sense. Before starting War & Peace I looked around for different translations, and I went with the Penguin Classics Briggs translation.
